Key Maintenance Plan - Tip #14

Cleaning Your Windows Can Increase their Life: (sourced various websites)

1. Inspect your windows so you know what areas need the most work. Check the exterior of your windows and their guide tracks. Dirt, bacteria, and dust collect here and wear down the structural elements of your windows.

2. Clean the track units with a vinegar-soaked rag. Dirt buildup in this area wears down the track springs, resulting in broken springs and broken windows. Once you’ve finished with the vinegar, rinse the tracks with water and dry to prevent acidic wear on the springs.

3. Protect your window frames from the elements by cleaning with a material-specific cleaner. Grime and filth buildup on the frame wears away protective paint and sealant. Use the cleaner appropriate to your frames: for wooden, vinyl, and aluminum frames) and scrub, scrub, scrub. Especially attend to the sills, as these areas are the most prone to damage.

4. Wipe the window surface with a glass cleaner, paying particular attention to where the glass meets the frame. This eliminates any lingering bacteria or dirt that, if left unchecked, could wear down the surface of the frame.
